Potassium permanganate is an important active component in potassium permanganate activated alumina. For certain reducing pollutants and odorous gases, potassium permanganate can exert an oxidizing effect. Therefore, a reasonable potassium permanganate loading is very important for the purification performance of the material.
When the potassium permanganate content is relatively low, the active components that can participate in the reaction in the material are relatively limited. Under conditions of high pollutant concentration or high treatment load, it may not meet actual usage requirements. Therefore, when other conditions are basically the same, increasing the loading of effective active components may help improve the treatment capacity of the material for specific pollutants.
However, this does not mean that the higher the potassium permanganate content, the better the odor removal effect will be indefinitely. Potassium permanganate needs to be evenly dispersed on the surface and in the pore structure of the activated alumina carrier in order to fully contact the gas passing through the bed. If the potassium permanganate loading is simply increased without reasonably controlling the pore structure of the carrier and the dispersion state of the active components, a corresponding improvement in performance may not necessarily be obtained.
The Activated Alumina Carrier Is Equally Important
When judging the performance of potassium permanganate activated alumina, it is not enough to look only at the KMnO₄ content. It is also necessary to pay attention to the performance of the activated alumina carrier itself.
Specific surface area is one of the important parameters. Activated alumina with a relatively large specific surface area can provide more surfaces and pores, which is beneficial to the dispersion of potassium permanganate and the contact between pollutants and active components.
The pore structure should also not be ignored. Reasonable pore size and pore volume can help gases enter the interior of the particles, allowing pollutants not only to remain on the outer surface of the particles, but also to come into contact with the active components loaded inside.
In addition, mechanical strength is also a factor that needs to be considered in industrial applications. Potassium permanganate activated alumina usually needs to be loaded in filter beds or adsorption beds for long-term use. If the particles are prone to breaking or generating a large amount of dust, it may not only affect gas flow, but also increase operation and maintenance costs.
Why Is the Dispersion State of Potassium Permanganate Important?
With the same KMnO₄ content, the actual use effects of different products may be different. One important reason is that the dispersion state of the active components on the carrier is different.
If potassium permanganate is unevenly distributed, some of the active components may be concentrated on the particle surface or even form local aggregation. In this case, although the KMnO₄ content detected in the product is relatively high, the contact efficiency between the gas and the effective active sites does not necessarily increase accordingly.
Actual Odor Removal Performance Is Also Related to Usage Conditions
In addition to the product’s own parameters, the actual odor removal performance of potassium permanganate activated alumina is also affected by usage conditions.
The type and concentration of pollutants are important factors. Different odorous gases have different reaction characteristics with potassium permanganate. Therefore, when the same potassium permanganate activated alumina is used for different pollutants, its treatment capacity may also be different.
Gas flow rate and contact time are also very important. If the gas flow rate is too fast, the contact time between pollutants and the adsorbent material may be shortened, thereby affecting the purification effect. Therefore, when designing a gas purification system, bed parameters need to be reasonably determined according to the gas flow rate, pollutant concentration, and equipment structure.
Humidity is also a factor that often needs to be considered in practical applications. Water in the gas may affect the adsorption behavior of pollutants on the surface of activated alumina and the subsequent reaction process.
